Rocket PicBrief:
13mm canard boost glider.

Construction:
The kit includes: 5 laser cut balsa parts, 1 balsa nose cone, 1 13mm motor pod tube, and 1 launch lug.

I ordered my kit from DiscountRocketry and it came bagged with all the parts and 1 8x11 inch sheet of instructions. There was a crack in my wing, but it didn't go all the way through and was easily fixed with a little glue before construction started.

The instruction sheet was clear and the illustrations were easy to read and showed where all the pieces fit together. All you need to build this kit is a tube of white glue. This kit is geared to be a "first" boost glide model and would be a great project for young hobbyists to complete with their parents. The typical Edmonds interlocking design makes for a quick and accurate building experience.

Finishing:
The kit didn't come with any decals, and the finished glider looks great in the bare balsa. I did color mine using magic markers to make it easier to track in the sky. I got joshed a little for using green and yellow though.. nothing like hunting for a grass-colored rocket!

Construction Rating: 5 out of 5

Flight:
There isn't any mention of glide testing the TINEE in the instructions. I found, like its bigger brothers, this model tracked straight and true when built following the directions. Prepping this kit is easy since the ejection charge spits the spent casing out of the pod. Just be careful if you fly from a dry range, and call "heads up".

My first flight was on a 1/2A3-2T and was a partial success. After a nice straight boost the ejection charge went off and broke the fuselage right behind the canards. I found all the parts and took it home for some repair work. I'd probably recommend coating the body just behind the canards with thin CA for added strength before your first flight, which is what I did to repair the damage sustained.

On the second flight, again with a 1/2A3-2T, everything went as just as you'd expect. Another good boost and after ejection a quick half-loop into a nice flat glide.

Recovery:
The TINEE doesn't have a lot of wing area so I don't think you'd be likely to see it fly over the horizon, never to be seen again. That said, the glides are really nice, and for a young flyer seeing something they built actually work well will make this kit one of their favorites.

Flight Rating: 4 ½ out of 5

Summary:
I can't think of any cons for this kit. The ease of assembly and quality laser cut components are typical of Edmonds product. If you have a junior rocketeer that wants to build something more than a 3FNC, or have never built a boost glider before, the TINEE should be your first choice.

edmond_tineeBrief:
This is a low power, 13mm motor mounted rocket glider.

I have had uniformly bad luck with every glider I have attempted. For the most part, the just crash. In one case it crashed and burned. In the case of the Cosmos Mariner, I just kind of lost heart and it has sat partially assembled for over a year. I have, however, heard good things about Edmond's Aerospace and decided to give it another try. I had several of their kits sitting around and decided to start small. Assuming I actually get it to glde, I wouldn't want to damage my reputation by walking very far.

edmond_tinee_motormountConstruction:
The kit comes with a single instruction page which is more illustration than anything else. If the instructions are any guide, it should go together very quickly.

Along with the instruction was a short 13mm motor tube with an ejection port already cut, a blasa nose cone, a balsa body, a sheet of balsa with die cut cannards and an 1/8" launch lug.

I started off by gluing the nose cone into the motor tube. The illustration makes clear that the cone goes on the end with the vent hole.

With that done, the motor tube was glued to the body. The instructions do include text to say that it is important that the motor tube be straight.

edmond_tinee_nakedNext up was the forward cannard. I test fitted it and found that the match was fine. I glued it in place and tried to ensure that it was straight and plumb. The after cannard, the larger of the two, was handled in the same way. Then it was just a matter of gluing on the vertical stabilizers to the after cannard and the launch lug to the motor tube.

The package claimed that assembly would take less than an hour. It took me more time to write this up, about 10 minutes.

PROs: very easy glider build
CONs: could use a bit more advice about trimming
edmond_tinee_dyedFinishing:
I know that it is not considered necessary to put a finish on gliders. Still, I never liked the looks of naked rockets and wanted to do something. One suggestion I got was to use Rit® dye thinned with denatured alcohol. I decided to give this a try.

I was unsure of the proportions but used approximately a 50:50 mixture and brushed it on with a sponge brush. I probably should have cut it a little more.

Construction Rating: 4 ½ out of 5

edmond_tinee_onthepadFlight:
I only got one flight out of the initial outing. I used a 1/2A3-2 and had to put just a touch of masking tape on it to keep it from falling out. It was not "friction retention" except in the sense that I wanted to retain the motor until ignition.

Right after clearing the rod, it veered over at an angle. I would guess that it made about a 40 degree angle with the ground. It popped the motor. It then began a very wide glide that was not a circle. It was more in the shape of an eccentric ellipse. When it was about 10 feet above the ground, the nose suddenly dropped and the rest of the glider followed. There was no damage.

Flight Rating: 3 ½ out of 5

Summary:
This is the first glider I have even come close to making work properly. It is an easy kit and a good introduction to boost gliders. I need to give it some more thought and practice trimming but I am satisfied.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5

GUEST's OPINION:
06/02 - "Our Tinee liked to waggle a bit on boost, but always stayed more or less vertical. The glide was very nice. We made the mistake of trying an A3 at the last launch. After gliding for a while the Tinee lodged in the very top of the tallest tree around (and they grow tall in California!). That glider was well up there. We'll build another and stick to 1/2 motors." (G.A.D)

GUEST's OPINION:
07/01 - "Flew my Tinee for the first time on 06/22/01; Chose an A3-4T for first flight, and what a site that was. During Boost, the Tinee did 3 or 4 high speed barrel rolls all over the sky, then settled out during coast. When the ejection charge blew, it was as if someone had flung the Tinee out of a slingshot. It settled into a beautiful, straight glide, and flew for about 3/4 of a mile (!). After searching for about 15 minutes, it was finally found by one of the 4 additional searchers. All in all, easy to build and a blast to fly. SUGGESTIONS-I am painting my Tinee Chartreuse or Neon Red, as natural balsa blends in much too well with a large grassy field mowed to about 6 inches. I'll gladly sacrifice a little extra weight for the chance of finding it. Also, I'm going to go with a 1/4A3-3T next time." (D.J.)

GUEST's OPINION:
04/01 - "My son won a Tinee in a contest hosted by Lawn Dart Rocketry and SoAR. The quality of the kit blew me away! Everything fit perfectly, and assembly took a whopping 10 minutes, not counting glue-drying time. I couldn't find any of the recommended motors, but it flies GREAT on an A3-4T. Even after smacking a tree limb it suffered no damage. This kit should be on every glider fan's wish list." (K.R.J.)

SPECIFIC ROCKET TIP:
07/03 - "While constructing the Tinee, the shoulder of the balsa nose cone was too long and partially covered the ejection vent, so I cut enough off the shoulder so that the top of the engine goes well past the vent. Everything worked fine for the first few flights, but after the inside of the started gunking up from ejection debris, I kept consistently blowing off the nose cone. I was able to solve the problem by putting just enough wadding in the tube to keep the engine from going forward of the vent. Instead of shortening the entire shoulder, a better idea would have been to bevel half the nose cone shoulder so that it directs the exhaust gas out but leaves enough should to prevent the engine from moving forward and blocking the ejection hole. Another good idea is to paint the nose cone a bright color so it's easier to find if it does blow off. Magic Marker works great on the wings." (B.C. )

08-22-2010 Alan Boldt Est SU A3-4 None - Glider 0-5 mph winds Flight PictureEvent: Lincoln Launch
- Great flight. Spiraled a couple wide arcs going up. Fluttered a little falling belly down for a second and then started gliding forward. No damage. These are great little kits!
03-30-2003 Bob Cox Est SU A3-4 None - Glider 5-10 mph winds - Like previous flight, a straight boost to 200', then looped during coast. This time it was only about 2' up at ejection, so no post-eject glide.
03-30-2003 Bob Cox Est SU A3-4 None - Glider 5-10 mph winds - Straight boost to about 200', then a half-loop to about 20' during delay. Ejection pitched the glider to about 30', stalled, then glided beautifully to ground. Kids loved it!
05-03-2003 Bob Cox Est SU A3-4 Very Late 10+ mph winds - Boosted with a wicked roll into the wind, then flattened out during coast. Ejected just before it it hit the tallest tree in a 53 acre field. Recovered safe at the base of the tree.
05-25-2003 Bob Cox Est SU 1/2A3-2 None - Glider 5-10 mph winds - Finally found the perfect engine for this bird. Screamed up to about 200 feet and started to loop, then ejected. Glided width of 2 soccer fields and crashed into net. GOAL!!!! Nose cone missing when recovered, but flew well anyway. GREAT!
06-15-2003 Bob Cox Est SU 1/2A3-2 Apogee - Perfect 0-5 mph winds - Beautiful boost, rolled over at apogee, then ejected. Nice gentle glide downwind about 200 feet. Nose cone blown off but recovered. Love this little glider.
07-06-2003 Bob Cox Est SU 1/2A3-2 Apogee - Perfect 0-5 mph winds - Wiggled during boost then rolled flat at apogee. On ejection, the glider shot forward into beautiful straight glide. Boinked into the side of a shed 500 feet downwind, with only slight dent in nose cone.
07-27-2003 Bob Cox Est SU 1/2A3-2 None - Glider 5-10 mph winds - Squirrelly again. Straight boost up, then at about 100 feet abruptly turned straight down. At about 30 feet, abruptly turned parallel to ground and glided about 30 feet. Never heard any ejection charge.
07-27-2003 Bob Cox Est SU 1/2A3-2 None - Glider 5-10 mph winds - Squirrelly. Curved downwind during boost, then curved around into wind. After ejection, turned downwind and weakly flew about 30 feet. Not as good as previous flights with same engine type.
08-24-2003 Bob Cox Est SU 1/2A3-2 Apogee - Perfect Calm - Short quick boost, stalled at apogee, then ejected. Glided to a nice landing.
10-12-2003 Bob Cox Est SU 1/2A3-2 Apogee - Perfect 5-10 mph winds - Fast boost with 1&1/2 barrel roll heading downwind. At ejection, glider shot forward, gliding cross-wind for about 10 seconds, then reversing direction and landing 5 sec later. Great flight.
04-10-2004 Bob Cox Est SU 1/2A3-2 None - Glider Gusty - Fast boost, arcing down-wind. Wallowed a bit until ejection, then glided down-wind with steep glide slope. Landed in dry drainage ditch. No damage. Probably too windy today.
10-09-2004 Bob Cox Est SU 1/2A3-2 Didn't See Calm - Drag race against another Tinee. Mine was first off pad. Lost sight of it while watching the other. Recovered safe, after long search.
04-03-2005 Bob Cox Est SU 1/2A3-2 None - Glider Calm - Zipped off pad then lost sight of it for a second. After popping engine, settled into beautiful straight glide until it snagged in top of 23-foot tree. Lucky I had long pole with 23.1-foot reach.
07-04-2008 Bob Cox Est SU 1/2A3-2 Apogee - NC Down 0-5 mph winds Event: Rodeo Grounds
- Quick boost with a roll. After ejection, settled into a steep spiral dive. 9 sec.
09-24-2007 Ned Dukes Est SU A10-3 None - Glider 10+ mph winds - The rocket went up and looped on its accent. it thens tarted to change direction quite rapidly, this was because of the wind being quite strong. then on the decent the rocket glided to ground quite well. 14 second glide

02-29-2004 Bill Eichelberger Est SU A10-3 Apogee - Perfect 0-5 mph winds AOB jr. - Slightly nose heavy glide. Nice flight though.
06-13-2004 Bill Eichelberger Est SU 1/4A3-3 None - Glider 0-5 mph winds - No glide, ejected just above terra firma. This was due to operator error, not a defect in a great little glider.
08-08-2004 Bill Eichelberger Est SU A10-3 None - Glider 0-5 mph winds AOB jr. - Much better flight, but drifted off into the distance toward the woods. Hit the top of a big white oak and tumbled all the way to the bottom.
08-08-2004 Bill Eichelberger Est SU A3-4 None - Glider 0-5 mph winds AOB jr. - Great boost and LONG coast. Glider was only 20 feet high when the ejection charge fired and about to complete a loop.

03-11-2007 Chris Gonnerman Est SU A3-4 Apogee - NC Down 5-10 mph winds - Came over a bit more than I'd like before popping the engine, and if it weren't for my wife's eagle eyes I would have lost it.
09-03-2007 Chris Gonnerman Est SU A3-4 Apogee - NC Down Calm - I added a little weight on one side of the main wing, in hopes of inducing it to turn. Instead, it went into a flat spin when the engine ejected. It did recover okay this time.
09-03-2007 Chris Gonnerman Est SU A3-4 Apogee - NC Down Calm RIP - I removed the weight (since it obviously hadn't helped any) and launched it again. Well, it did glide nicely this time... straight into a bean field. I doubt I'll ever see it again; down under those bean plants it's invisible. Status: Lost
02-18-2001 Kenneth Johnson Est SU A10-3 Just Past (1-2sec) 5-10 mph winds - Wow! I really love this little glider! Not one of the recommended motors, but GREAT altitude, and really good glide. Durable too.
09-20-2008 John Lee Est SU 1/2A3-2 Just Past (1-2sec) 0-5 mph winds Flight PictureEvent: Amateur Rocketeers of Texas Freedom Launch
- Maiden flight, angled ascent, fairly decent glide, at least it was the best I've ever been able to manage.
07-19-2009 John Lee Est SU 1/4A3-3 None - Underpowered Calm Flight PictureEvent: Vacation Bible School 09
- Got all of about 15 feet up and then spit the motor. All I can figure is that it thought it was a 1/4A3-0

08-08-2004 Morgan Lee Est SU 1/2A3-2 Apogee - NC Up 5-10 mph winds - Angled sharply downwind as soon as it left rod, but then straightened up for the rest of the boost. After ejection, glider tumbled a bit before establishing a good down-wind glide. Safe landing.
10-09-2004 Morgan Lee Est SU 1/2A3-2 None - Glider Calm - Drag race against another Tinee. Fast boost with arc to west. After ejection, performed a quick inside loop, then settled into a long gentle glide to south. NICE.
04-03-2005 Morgan Lee Est SU 1/2A3-2 Apogee - Perfect Calm - Immediately pitched down after leaving rod. Pitched up into large loop after burnout, with ejection at top of loop. Rolled over into straight glide with no wobble. Gentle landing @ 24 sec.
