Rocket PicBrief:
This is an easy to build, single stage flying saucer that needs no recovery system. It is an easy way to certify level 1 for high power. Relatively slow ascent and limited altitude mean a short walk during recovery.

Construction:
A central paper/foam laminate "plate" with a 38mm motor mount tube installed perpendicular to the plane of the plate makes the main structure of the rocket. The forward cone is of paper, reinforced with epoxy soaked fibreglas tape. The aft cone is of unreinforced paper. No motor retention is included.

The instructions were quite clear and well illustrated. When I had questions, Art answered emails quickly and appropriately. Assembly was logical and took me several short evenings. The paper and foam parts came pre-marked and the explicit instructions made it easy to cut them. A launch lug is not used--there are holes in the plate and fore and aft cones to accomodate a 1/4" launch rod. It is critical that these holes be aligned when the cones are glued to the plate. I wish I had drawn an alignment line on the motor mount tube to aid the assembly of the cones. No special tools are required. Adhesives are white glue and slow setting epoxy.

Finishing:
A number of different "pre-finished" paper cones are available. I chose the metallic gold paper and did no further finishing. A plain paper version is available that will allow the user freedom to design their own paint scheme.

Construction Rating: 5 out of 5

Flight:
There are a large number of recommended 38mm motors: Cesaroni Pro38 G69 and H153 reloads, Aerotech RMS-38/240 H73J, H123W, H148R, H112J, I161W, and I218R reloads, and Ellis Mountain H48 and I134 single use motors. I used an Ellis Mountain H48-8 for my first flight, which was my Tripoli level 1 certification flight. Reloadable motors should not use the ejection charge. For single use motors the ejection charge should be removed per the directions.

Recovery:
This kit uses "aerobrake" recovery. The rocket has large surface area and a very low weight. It recovers nose first at a surprisingly low speed. There was no damage and only a slight amount soil clung to the forward end of the engine casing.

Flight Rating: 5 out of 5

Summary:
This was a very easy kit to build. It is an unusual design and attracts a lot of attention at the flying field. The simplicity of the design lends itself to a certification flight. The low and slow flight is quite exciting and almost guarantees a short walk for recovery.

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5

SPECIFIC ROCKET TIP:
11/04 - "After the second flight the launch rod holes are showing a bit of damage. Next time I'll put a launch lug onto the motor mount. This will aid assembly alignment and hopefully solve launch rod damage to the shrouds." (W.T.M. )

Wind Notes
09-16-2006 Donald Besaw AT RMS H123-0 None - Tumble 5-10 mph winds Gold - Excellent first flight, loud, smokey, and fiery boost, the H123W is a great 38mm oddroc motor. Came down nicely via aerobrake recovery and landed without damage.
10-21-2006 Donald Besaw AT RMS H112-0 None - Tumble 5-10 mph winds Gold - Excellent flight, nice, quick smokey boost. Landed in some high weeds and took awhile to find but was recovered without damage.
01-12-2007 Donald Besaw AT RMS G339-P None - Tumble 10+ mph winds Gold - Awesome flight, totally screamed off the pad on the G339 W9 motor. Everything except the Estes E pad survived the brute force, sheared the legs right off. I gotta fly this rocket/motor combo again!!!
04-03-2007 Donald Besaw AT RMS G61-0 None - Tumble 5-10 mph winds Gold - Wonderful flight, I really love this G61W, very loud, smokey and a huge bright white flame. What more could you want with a saucer flight. Recovered great via aerobrake recovery. No damage.
04-08-2007 Donald Besaw AT RMS G339-P None - Tumble 5-10 mph winds Gold - Another sizzlin' flight with this Warp-9 motor. Insane boost, tore off the pad in the blink of an eye and the motor was so loud that I heard a long lasting echo. This G339N totally rocks. No damage.
05-08-2007 Donald Besaw AT RMS G71-0 None - Tumble 5-10 mph winds Gold - AWESOME flight with a 38/29mm adaptor and the new G71R. Awesome motor, powerful, large, bright red flame and very loud as well. Landed close to pad. No damage.
05-15-2007 Donald Besaw AT RMS G71-0 None - Tumble 5-10 mph winds Gold - Another beautiful flight with the G71R, this motor is awesome, lit quickly with a crapperhead, powerful, nice red flame and super LOUD!!! No damage.
07-07-2007 Donald Besaw AT RMS G61-0 None - Tumble 0-5 mph winds Gold - Great flight, loud, smokey and fiery. I love using this G61W load in saucers. No damage.
07-28-2007 Donald Besaw AT RMS G61-0 None - Tumble 0-5 mph winds Gold - Another great flight but this G61W chuffed and smoked for a bit before coming up to full pressure. Gets maybe 200 feet on this load. No damage.
10-07-2007 Donald Besaw AT RMS G67-0 None - Tumble 5-10 mph winds Gold - Great flight, quick ignition and nice red flame from the G67R. No damage.
02-07-2008 Donald Besaw AT RMS G339-P None - Tumble 5-10 mph winds Gold - Awesome flight, tore off the pad and up into the evening sky atop a brief but bright orange flame. Unfortunately I noticed a tear on the bottom shroud so this saucer's days of flying on Warp-9 are done. Nothing major though.
09-05-2009 Donald Besaw Research - H90 Red Flame None - Tumble 0-5 mph winds Gold - Drag race with my 38mm Cinco. This was the last to lift off. No damage.
09-05-2009 Donald Besaw Research - H79 Yellow Flame None - Tumble 0-5 mph winds Gold - Another great flight of this saucer, nice bright yellow flame from the motor. No damage.
09-05-2009 Donald Besaw Research - H33 Black Smokey None - Tumble 0-5 mph winds Gold - Yet another excellent flight of the saucer, this time on a research H33 C-slot Black Smokey load. This motor burned for about 5-6 seconds, way cool. No damage.
06-26-2004 Rocky Firth AT RMS H73-0 None - Tumble 0-5 mph winds - Awesome flight. The smoke trail si sucked up behind the saucer making a great visual with this Blackjack load. Plus it was a perfect first flight and my level 1 flight. Cert Flight: L1
07-25-2004 Rocky Firth AT RMS H73-0 None - Tumble 0-5 mph winds - Love these smoking motors and Art's saucers. Another great flight.
09-12-2004 Rocky Firth AT RMS H73-0 None - Tumble 0-5 mph winds - Another perfect flight. Art's deltas are amazing to fly.
10-24-2004 Will Marchant Ellis SU H48-8 Didn't Record 0-5 mph winds Event: Tripoli Whitakers
- Slight weathercock.
10-31-2004 Will Marchant Ellis SU H50-6 None - Tumble 5-10 mph winds Event: Tripoli Battle Park Culpeper
- I used the 29mm adapter that came with my BSD Horizon 4. A little bit of corkscrewing at the end of thrust. A perfect flight and landing.
