This tip describes how to make a simple MicroMaxx launch rod adapter from spare
parts. It provides a quick and easy way to avoid swapping launch rods at the pad.
Materials-
- music wire MMX launch rod expended
- 24mm motor
- 1/8" launch lug tube or AT Copperhead igniter tube
- electrical tape
To make the adapter, simply tape the MMX rod and 1/8" lug to opposite sides
of an expended 24mm diameter motor. Take care to ensure the lug does not extend above the top edge of the motor.

To use, simply slide the adapter onto the standard launch pad rod, then load the
MMX rocket onto the smaller rod.
The 24mm motor can be substituted with a larger diameter if you have a bigger MMX
model or are concerned with fins hitting the 1/8" launch rod.

Featured Tip: Building REALLY Small Parts for MMX Rockets - I recently scratch built an MMX AGM-12B Bullpup. I haven’t scratch built very many rockets and this was my first Micromaxx rocket altogether. What I have gleaned from this experience isn’t specific to the Bullpup but certainly applies to scratch building as well as to building Micromaxx rockets... more - Igniters
Quest MicroMaxx starter sets - I built a re-usable igniter holder from two pieces of PCB. The tip of the igniter is made from an inch of wire from an Apogee igniter. I've used three of these successfully a total of about a dozen times. The key to success is plenty of power; the Apogee wire takes more than the original MMX igniter does. Heating the wire too slowly damages the MMX-I’s plastic nozzle. I usually use a 9.6v NiCad pack from an RC car, and it works nicely. - P.C. and F.S.from RMR - Igniters
Quest MicroMaxx starter sets - One hint: using something bigger than a 9V battery helps with ignition reliability. I use one of the Pratt 12V packs. - C-L V.C. from RMR
